Protein Bars

Protein bars are not all the same.

Protein bars can look similar on the shelf while having very different nutrition profiles. Some are primarily protein snacks. Others are closer to confectionery with added protein.

Compare protein per 100 g, sugar, fibre, fat and the ingredient list, and Sláinte helps you see the information behind the packaging.

What should you look at in a protein bar?

Protein

Check how much protein the bar provides per 100 g and per serving.

Sugar

Sugar content can vary significantly between bars. Check the nutrition declaration rather than relying only on front of pack claims.

Fibre

Fibre can add useful context to a bar's overall nutrition profile.

Fat and saturates

Protein bars can contain nuts, chocolate, oils and other fat sources.

Ingredients

Look at the first ingredients and the overall list to see whether the bar is built from protein sources, grains, nuts, syrups or chocolate.

Serving size

Two bars can use different serving sizes, so per 100 g values make comparisons more consistent.

What makes a protein bar good?

There is no single answer.

The better question is what this product provides, and what you are getting along with it.

Sláinte's score considers the relevant product information and explains the result.

Compare before you choose

A protein bar that scores 63 may look attractive on the front of the pack.

Another bar might score 91.

Sláinte's job is to explain the difference.
